Career Counseling Process
Due to the changing pace of technology and massive globalization the need for various skill sets have become a necessary component of the employment. Career development is a valuable component of high school, college experience, and higher educational platforms. Throughout the lifespan of career development, which is an evolving process; what one considers to be a suitable fit in their early adult life may not be the career path desired as an empty nester. Hence, one may find that career counseling does not end with college, rather it becomes an important tool throughout ones developmental stages. The need for career counseling may also occur as an individual changes jobs, returns to school, moves with a spouse, or finds their previous career fields to be lacking in personal fulfillment.
As your counselor, I seek to aid you throughout the process of career contemplation. The beginning process involves developing a personality profile. This will enable the observation of one’s preferences and strengths as they relate to one’s career choice. The Meyer Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a resourceful assessment that highlights ones communication style, one’s ability to handle conflict, and enhance one problem solving skills. Further, an assessment of one’s decision making process will aid in the contemplative process and the eventual decision on one path. An assessment is the use of any formal or informal technique to collect data about a client. Further, the ability to connect the client with helpful resources in employment and education is an additional component of the sessions.
In addition, making choices that coincide with one’s values is an essential determinant in the career choice planning process. Although counseling theories and approaches vary, the progression of one’s career path contemplation may arise within various stages of the therapy process.
